This week on Why It’s Worth a Watch, Tiffany and I tune in to NBC and check out two new dramas, The Firm and Smash.

Can you guess which one I get to review?

If you haven’t heard of Smash you either a) fast forward through every commercial blindfolded or b) fell off the face of the planet for the two months leading up to the Super Bowl. NBC has been promoting this show to death leading up to it’s “Monday after the Super Bowl” premiere.

That’s a lot of hype, ya’ll.

The show is a look at the creation of a Broadway musical, as well as the lives of those involved, and how their lives are affected by theater life. It follows Julia (Debra Messing) and Tom (Christian Borle), fairly successful writers, as they work together on an idea for a musical about Marilyn Monroe. As the idea turns into actual songs and concepts, we start meeting other key players needed to bring the musical to life: Eileen Rand (Anjelica Houston) as the producer, Derek Wills (Jack Davenport) as the womanizing director, and of course, the cast.

The big question is, who will play Marilyn?

Enter Ivy (Megan Hilty), a blonde bombshell with a voice to match. Experienced in the world of theater, but still looking to snag that big part, she seems to be a shoe in. Then there is Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee), a fresh faced girl from Iowa trying to break in to theater.

Both girls have the chops. But what will it take to get the part?

Without spoiling anything, you find out early on in the series who will be given the part, and given the scenes leading up to it, you will certainly have your thoughts on why. Yet, the show moves forward with the other girl in the ensemble and the idea that “anything can happen in the theater”.

At home, the various players deal with personal lives affected by theater. A boyfriend concerned about lecherous director-types, a husband wanting to adopt a child, the producer’s divorce and its hand in interfering; life in the theater never stays in just the theater.

The musical production on the show is great. The original songs sound like true Broadway, and with the talents of Hilty (a Wicked alum) and McPhee (an American Idol contestant) belting the new tunes, you can’t help but feel like you have a little musical theater in your living room. With other big Broadway names in the cast (Christian Borle, Brian D’Arcy James, Will Chase) you can’t help but be excited about the potential for song in the upcoming episodes.

Well, you can’t help it if you are a Broadway geek, anyhow.

The show has been labeled by some as the “adult Glee”, but I am hoping that it turns out to be more. The musical talent is well beyond that, but it remains to be seen if the writers will take the show beyond a showcase for singers and tales of the casting couch.

For that reason, I’m giving this show a SSTV. The ingredients are there for something really delicious, but the end result remains to be seen.

What do you think of Smash? Are you excited about Broadway on your TV? Have you connected with any of the characters yet?

Now click over to Tiffany’s blog and read her thoughts on The Firm.

Come back next week when we flip networks and review two ABC new drama: Parenthood and Revenge.

Remember to stop by the #watchwed hashtag in Twitter to discuss any of today’s reviews, or to mention any television programs that you’d like to see on Why It’s Worth a Watch Wednesday in the future.

This week on Why It’s Worth a Watch, Tiffany and I get to discuss some brand new dramas, The Finder and Alcatraz.

When we set about scheduling new shows for 2012, I jumped at the chance to take on Alcatraz. You see, I can’t really recall a project that J.J. Abrams has been involved in that I didn’t enjoy. Unfamiliar with Abrams’ body of work? He was involved in the creation of Felicity, Alias, Lost, and Fringe, produced Person of Interest, and directed Star Trek (the new movie) and Super 8.

Not too shabby, eh?

I find that every J.J. Abrams project I’ve watched seems to do one thing really well – characters.

And we all know how much I love my characters. But first, the story.

In 1963, Alcatraz was shut down and the prisoners were transferred due to unsafe conditions. Or at least, that is what the government told everyone. In reality, the prisoners and guards disappeared. Not escaped. Just, *poof*, gone.

Fast forward to present day to find something even stranger taking place. They are reappearing exactly as they were in 1963. Dr. Hauser (Sam Neil, Jurassic Park) is the FBI agent running a secret task force to find these inmates and guards, referred to as 63s, with his own connections to what happened that day.

He enlists the help of Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones), a homicide detective for the SFPD who has grown up believing her grandfather was a guard at Alcatraz. She brings with the expertise of Dr. Soto (Jorge Garcia, Lost), a writer who is a bit of an expert on Alcatraz, as well as a comic book store owner.

I love the casting choices here, as well as the characters themselves. Sam Neil is authoritative, mysterious, and leaves you wondering if he is a good guy, bad guy, or something in between. Jorge Garcia is charming, adorable, and awkward. If you were a fan of Hurley on Lost, you’ll enjoy Dr. Soto here. Sarah Jones, a relative unknown from just down the road from me, conveys strength without being a one-dimensional character. I love the small details of her character, like her love of eating Dim Sum all the time or the green ’68 Fastback she drives, that make her seem like a real person.

The writers not only present us with interesting characters, but give us pieces of back story to explain who they are. Why would a successful PhD spend so much time with comic books? Why would a young homicide cop agree to work for this secret government organization? Questions like these get answers.

Of course, you’ll have a lot more questions that haven’t been answered yet. But that’s a good thing.

It’s still too soon to tell how successful the show will be, or how excited I will continue to be for the next episode. For now, it receives a solid MacTV rating. If you’ve enjoyed any of the Abrams’ catalog, give this one a try.

Are you watching Alcatraz? What do you think? Who is your favorite character? Remember, no spoilers in the comments! Feel free to discuss details with me on Twitter using the #watchwed hashtag, though. This is the type of show you may want to talk about.

Now head over to Tiffany’s and see what she thinks of The Finder.

Come back next week when we flip networks and review two of NBC’s new dramas: Smash and The Firm.

In my short time on this earth, I’ve seen a lot of changes in how people do business and share information, thanks to many advances in technology.

I’m a fan. I practically sleep with my phone and I am pretty sure that my relationship with Google is unhealthy.

Having said that, with all this wonderful progress comes a certain amount of danger.

I’ve read posts and received messages asking about scams, hoaxes, and so far, none of my friends have fallen prey.

In an effort to help out my many writer friends who find themselves spending more time plugged in than they ever expected, I took some time out to interview a securities expert on some best practices when online.

He’s spent a great deal of brainpower and time earning those letters. Thanks for joining us, Ian.

Please don’t hack me.

I only use my powers for good.

Mostly.

That’s a relief. Unfortunately, there are hackers out there that don’t use their powers for good. How does an average Joe keep their computer safe? Is that possible?

Sure, turn off your computer, unplug it, and place it in a vault. I think most people would sleep
well at night knowing that their computer is protected from unwanted access, don’t you?

Is this how the whole interview is going to go?

::grins::

Actually, some computers are turned off and placed in a vault to protect the information stored on them. But realistically that’s not possible for most.

Right. So for the “most” of us, what should we do?

To be reasonably protected, it is important to do a few things.

First, continually educate yourself about best security practices like you are doing right now. Keep in mind that security is not a state that one can attain; it is a process that must be repeated frequently.

Second, you need to know what software is on your computer. Once you know what you have, make sure all of it is up to date and fully patched. Security products can assist in this, but a nice free tool called Secunia Personal Software Inspector is available to help you with this part of the process. Remember, new updates may come out daily. You can schedule this product to
regularly scan your system and it will show you what needs to be updated and even point you to the updates to install. Always make sure Windows, Adobe, Java, and Office updates are applied.

Third, use a security product and keep it updated. Ideally it will have anti-virus, generic buffer overflow protection, intrusion prevention, and a firewall built into it. Companies like eEye Digital Security, and Symantec have products that contain these types of protection.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Awesome. Thanks for the link for Secunia. We all like free stuff that helps protect us. Does that mean when a random window pops up telling us we need to download a virus protection, we should do it? I mean, I had one the other day saying it was Windows Defender. That sounds totally legit.

When in doubt, don’t. All sorts of malware is out there made to appear like legit software.

Hmmm. Ok. I totally knew that.

::tosses laptop out window::

How about this email here? Ebay needs me to confirm my log in information. I don’t want an interruption in my eBay service. I’m in the middle of bidding on some sweet Star Wars memorabilia.

This is an example of a social engineering attack called phishing. This attack is very common over email. For example someone may send you an email pretending to be a company or a bank cleverly asking you for some personal information, accounts/passwords, or enticing you to click a link.

Clicking the link is the last thing you would want to do. Let me repeat this, NEVER click a link in an email. It is always best to open a web browser and navigate to the site you wish to visit.

For example, this will allow you to go to the real site “ebay.com” and not the fake site “ebay.ee.com” (I just made up that URL). These fake sites may look like the real site but many times they will infect your computer with malware automatically even if you are full patched and up-to-date with your security product updates.

::gasp:: Really??

Yes, it’s true. Also, do NOT reply to these emails as that would confirm a valid email address and could also allow for further social engineering attempts. Keep this in mind, many advertisements, content on social networking sites, and other genuine sites link to malware too. Be very cautious about what you click on. Products that contain host intrusion protection and 0 day protection or generic buffer overflow protection can offer some protection from these types of attacks. Educating yourself will go very far in preventing social engineering attacks as people are always the weakest link.

We are the weakest link!

::rolls eyes::

What if I get an email from a friend saying they are stranded in a foreign country and need money?

Don’t send any.

A Nigerian prince who needs my banking info?

Not so much.

My email provider saying that they need me to confirm my account or they’ll close it?

Don’t click.

But the IRS is trying to send me a notice. Surely…

Don’t click.

But if I don’t act now, this refinancing deal is going to slip through my fingers.

Let it slip. Don’t click. Do you have that out of your system now?

I think so.

How about passwords? I have maybe a bajillion of them. I am pretty sure that if I just make them all “password123” that would be best. Then, I can remember them all easily, and no one will ever guess that.

Er, no. Not a good idea.

If you choose to set a password yourself follow some basic guidelines:

Make sure you never reuse a password. This can be hard to do but it keeps your other information from easy access if a password was found.

Make it something you can easily remember plus as long and complex as you can including upper/lower case letters, numbers, and special characters. Fifteen or more characters is especially good.

Do not include things that someone might find out about you such as pet names, important dates, and information found on your social networking sites.

Dude. We’ve met before, right? What makes you think I can remember a bajillion different passwords?

You don’t have to. The site lastpass.com is a great site and is safe to use. You can check out this pod-cast for more information.

Oh. That’s cool! And only a dollar a month. My brain thanks you, sir.

You’re, uh, she’s welcome…?

How about my phone? I don’t want to be stalked because I have technology in my pocket.

Well…

Sorry, hold on. I’m checking in at “My Crib” on Foursquare. And Facebook. And…

Yeah, you might want to skip that.

Oh.

::puts down phone::

::picks up phone::

Just because you aren’t intentionally “checking in” doesn’t mean your location isn’t being appended to what you upload. Geotagging allows a photo to be tagged with the GPS location your phone feeds it. But, you can turn off this setting. On your iPhone, we can do it here. [Settings, General, Location Services] You also want to look at the individual applications you load to see what their settings are.

::hands phone back::

I am now unstalkable!

Technically, no.

Having a GPS on your phone is not the only way you can be tracked. Your cell phone communicates with cell phone towers and your location can be tracked that way as well. You can find some good information on the eff.org site about this and other privacy issues.

I believe this quote says it all:

“Unfortunately, if you want to use your cell phone at all, avoiding the threat of this kind of real-time tracking is nearly impossible. That’s because the government can track your cell phone whenever it’s on, even if you aren’t making a call. The government can even track some cell phones when they are powered down, unless you have also removed the battery. So, once again, there is a security trade-off: the only way to eliminate the risk of location tracking is to leave the cell phone at home, or remove the battery.”

That sounds like an episode of CSI. Or Law & Order. Or…well, you get the idea.

Last question for today, although I make no guarantees it will be the last ever. Google has been telling me to read it’s new privacy terms. In basic terms, is there anything I need to know?

Very simply, I would not expect any privacy. If you don’t want your searches tied to your account then you would want to log out before you do any google searches. Remember, though, that your ISP can see what you’re doing and they can offer up that information.

So, Google has me in their clutches either way, huh?

Pretty much. That being said I still use google all the time. You can check out the this podcast if you want more details on the subject.

Well, that’s about all the time and space we have today. Thank you so much for joining us Ian.

No problem.

I’ll be sure to stalk you online, I MEAN, give you a call if my readers have more questions.

Riiiiiight.

Readers, what answers did you find helpful? If you have more questions or would like more clarification, please let me know!

I’m securing (no pun intended) exclusive rights to our expert as we speak. He’s not the only tech savvy fellow around these parts, so feel free to all sorts of questions!

Today’s post is a contribution to August McLaughlin’s Beauty of a Woman Blogfest. Be sure to visit her blog on February 10th to read posts from all over the blogosphere.

Beauty, noun

the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest).

Beauty is a funny thing. I’ve never thought of myself as beautiful. Even on days where I could look in the mirror and feel like I looked pretty, beautiful was never the word that crossed my mind.

When August asked for bloggers to contribute to a blogfest discussing the Beauty of a Woman, I was more than happy to participate, but I couldn’t imagine writing a post that had anything to do with me.

So I sat here in front of the computer and thought.

And thought. When was the last time I felt beautiful?

My reflex was to say never. Not in my skinny teenage years, not on my wedding day, not ever. As much as a I rail against the media’s depiction of female attractiveness, I am totally a victim of it. I don’t fit into that magazine cover image. I despise shopping for clothes as it inevitably involves too many mirrors. I avoid cameras (at least the front of them) at all costs.

I don’t think I am beautiful.

This morning, I woke up to the sounds of my best friend in the kitchen. She and her husband are cooking us breakfast – yuca, eggs, and bacon. I’m sitting here, sipping coffee while chatting with them, just like I did when she and I were roomies in Seattle.

She is one of my dearest friends, practically a sister to me. We’ve taken care of each other on days when we’ve been sick and miserable and days filled with stress (like our weddings). We’ve traveled together, taken vacations where we sat around in relaxed silence knitting and reading, and generally enjoyed each others’ company while doing absolutely nothing.

Beauty: the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind.

Sitting here this morning, intensely pleased and deeply satisfied (and not just because there is bacon), I can tell you this: my friend is beautiful.

And I guess, if I am the the same kind of friend for her, so am I.

Beautiful.

This week on Why It’s Worth a Watch Wednesday, Tiffany and I review some more cop drama with Breakout Kings and Southland.

Now, we’ve been down the this road before. For as long as I can remember, there have been police procedurals on our TV screens. But it’s been a while since I’ve watched anything like this.

Southland originally appeared on NBC, but was moved to an earlier timeslot (from 10 to 9) where it was too dark for audiences. NBC dropped the show, but TNT snatched up the remaining episodes already ordered for season 2, added a third season, then took their time coming out with the fourth season. What makes this show too dark for NBC?

Southland is a drama following cops on the streets of LA, both in the wealthy and not-so-wealthy neighborhoods. The season 4 opener sums up the tone of the show well:

“Cops wake up every morning different from the rest of us. Our worst nightmare is just their Wednesday.”

Now, while this may sound like it is setting you up for an over the top, barely believable show, it is interesting that quite a few of the stories, particularly some of the more horrific, are pulled from real cases, not merely the writers’ imaginations.

The creators don’t pull any punches in their depictions of life as a cop in LA. Some scenes will make you squirm. Some will leave you with a lump in your throat and a knot in your stomach. This is not the show to watch when you are trying to unwind. If you are the type to get attached to the characters, remember, bad things happen. The writers of this show don’t spare characters for being “the good guys”.

This isn’t to say the show isn’t good. As a matter of fact, the show is very well done. Not every call or case is horrific. Some are pretty mundane, even humorous, which only adds to the real feel of the show.

It’s hard to discuss plot or storyline in a show that is really about the lives of LAPD officers without giving anything away. So I won’t. Some characters have personal problems that complicate their lives as cops, or at least contribute to the type of officer they have become. While their lives are part of the story, they aren’t the focus, particularly in the latest season. You’ll just have to watch to get to know more.

The acting is excellent. It’s an ensemble cast, so I won’t list every member, but watch for standouts like Michael Cudlitz and Regina King. Fans of the OC will be excited to watch Ben McKenzie in a role that shows that he’s got some acting chops beyond his teenage heartthrob days.

In addition to solid acting and writing, even the filming of this show is a factor in making it work. The use of steadicam, in addition to other brilliant cinematography choices I won’t spoil, make the show seem that much more real.

Having said all of the above, this show is not for everyone. Realism and moving to TNT at a 10P time slot meant the ability to censor less language and show more “grit”. Be warned, definitely not something to watch with your kids, and may not be the right show for even some adults.

Southland is definitely deserving of a GTV, however, some may choose to pass on this dish. Like a live squid or beef carpaccio, this show is raw and perhaps an acquired taste. Proceed at your own risk.

Are you watching Southland? What do you think? Has the show had you on the edge of your seat or on the verge of tears?

Now click over to TIffany’s blog and find out what she things of The Breakout Kings.

Come back next week when Tiffany and I review two of Fox’s new dramas: Alcatraz and The Finder.

Remember to stop by the #watchwed hashtag in Twitter to discuss any of today’s reviews, or to mention any television programs that you’d like to see on Why It’s Worth a Watch Wednesday in the future.

Two weeks ago, I wrote about a mom in need and how Twitter stepped up to the plate to help. I was amazed that through a bit of Tweeting what we were able to accomplish.

The generosity didn’t stop there. Several of the moms from the online group where we “met” pitched in to send her a gift card, so she could buy necessary items. Some of these moms are having tough times themselves, but they found a way to give at least a little. Five dollars may not sound like much, but it adds up. (Next time you go to the grocery store, think about how much toothpaste, deodorant, and paper towels add to your bill. Not to mention food.)

In addition to the money gathered from the other moms, a reader of this blog, after reading the about this mother’s plight, made a very generous donation to the gift card.

Hoping to continue the trend of helping this woman, I put the word out on Twitter again, this time asking if anyone in her area where she had children’s items they could spare. Leaving her situation quickly, she left most of their belongings behind. All those things you would have around your house for a 6 month and 2.5 year old were gone.

Again, there were those that couldn’t help personally, but were more than happy to spread the word. One person in particular was able to collect items (a lot of them) from two of her friends. Even though it meant driving all over (something I know is not her favorite pastime) gathering and delivering, she did so willingly.

For someone she doesn’t know.

Even the mother in need made sacrifices to help someone else. I found out that she did manage to grab a few things before making a run for it. As it turns out, while she was staying in a woman’s shelter, she met another mom who she thought was worse off than her. So, before leaving the shelter for her next destination, she gave that mom what she had.

On the run, with next to nothing, she was still able to look beyond her own difficult situation and think of someone else.

All of these people chose to make a sacrifice – of money or time – purely to help someone in need. No one was watching. There was no promise of praise or recognition. The act wasn’t about them.

We surround ourselves in a world that tends to tell us to pursue our dreams, make time for ourselves, and become something great. Yet, sometimes on the quest to becoming great, we forget the importance of being good. To all of those who took the time out of their day to put another human being’s needs ahead of their own, thank you.

As everyone sets out about their weekend plans, I hope the kind acts that these various strangers performed for a woman in need inspire you. It could mean eating in one night instead of going out and giving that money to someone who needs it. It might mean making plans to clean out that closet full of stuff you aren’t using and donating it to a family who can. Or it might be as simple as sharing a kind word with someone who needs it.

Whatever you choose to do…*

*I love hearing your stories. Check out the #GoWithout campaign and share your story with us. You just might inspire someone else to go without and do good!

This week Tiffany and I review two shows targeting the younger audiences on Why It’s Worth a Watch Wednesday. Both shows attract all ages, so we take a deeper look to see if either are worh your time. Tiffany takes on mystery with ABC Family’s The Lying Game, while I hang in my musical wheelhouse with Glee.

First off, let it be known, I love music, but even more, I love musicals.

I’ve sat in my car in a parking lot just so I could listen to a Sondheim interview on NPR. I’ve considered spending funds I didn’t have to see more than one Broadway play. I can probably perform a medley of musicals ranging from Urinetown* to Sweeney Todd from beginning to end.

It may not sound very good, but I’d get the words right.

When Glee first appeared on my screen, I was more than a little excited. Showtunes on my TV? Yes, please. Then Lea Michele began singing one of my favorite Les Miserables songs, On My Own (when I was little I always wanted to be Eponine; my roommates even heard me sing this once upon a butt-dial) and I thought to myself, “this show was made for me”.

I mean, Lea Michele, the amazing Broadway star of Spring Awakening (or at least, she seemed amazing in the Tony performance I saw her in). C’mon!

So, I watched. I sang along without shame to showtunes, mashups (smashing two songs together), and new takes on modern songs. Neil Patrick Harris, who I watched in Sweeney Todd and recently starred as Bobby in Sodheim’s Company, made an appearance. Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth, Broadway stars, made regular guest appearances. This show was going to rock.

By outward appearances, one would think that I was a Gleek, the title given to fans of the show.

Now, the show itself isn’t so much about showtunes as it is about the lives of high school outcasts, brought together through Glee club, a club that is positioned as a really dorky club to join. It’s a place for rejects. Even the teacher in charge of the club, Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison, no stranger to musical theater), is working out his own issues through the creation of this club.

The show threatened to lose me here. A bunch of good looking and obviously talented kids are the outcasts? Really? Oh, but wait, they are singing again. Those sweet tunes will make me forgive anything, right?

Then, the show took to addressing the seriousness of bullying, an important issue that should be addressed in a show about teens.

But here is where my love for the show quickly dissipated.

Let me be clear, no one should be bullied. Period. End of story.

::steps up on soapbox::

But, if a show is going to address the issue one week, then make fun of a different group of kids another week, isn’t that sending a mixed message? In an episode focusing on how “it’s okay to be who you are” sexually, the episode also made sure to make fun of those who chose not to have sex. Promiscuous? Go for it. Don’t let anyone tell you different. Saving yourself for adulthood or marriage? Well, you are touched in the head and obviously need to be made fun of.

Really? Isn’t that setting up more reasons to bully others?

From a female standpoint, I also have a bone to pick with the show. The Glee girls are often identified by their relationship status; a girl can not seem to be happy unless she has a significant other. Mercedes, one of the few main characters who isn’t shaped like a Hollywood starlet, is told in one episode that she is “eating her feelings” because she doesn’t have a boyfriend. That’s right, girls. If you are heavy, it’s because you are emotionally stuffing your face to replace your lack of a boyfriend.

Grrrrrrr.

The longer I watched the show, the more I realized I didn’t really like most of the characters. Sure, some of them had some killer lines. Like the not-so-bright cheerleader, Brittany (”When I pulled my hamstring, I went to a misogynist.”) or the absolutely evil Coach Sylvester (Jane Lynch). But take away the occasional well delivered funny, and I couldn’t be bothered to care about any of these self-involved people as, well, people.

I know. Not everyone cares about that. For example, I am sure people who watch The Bachelor** aren’t looking to make a friends with those ladies. For me though, characters are important.

Now, I am aware that some would argue that teens are self-involved, annoying, and obsessed with sex. I would argue that not all of them are, but the more they are portrayed that way, the more those who don’t fit that image of a teen will feel like they need to change who they are to fit in.

Maybe it makes me old fashioned to want more positive images of teenagers in a show that presents itself as a program about accepting who you are and those around you. If that makes me the cranky old guy shaking his fist at passerbys from my porch, so be it.

::steps off soapbox, unsteadily, since I am obviously 80::

Glee gets a JFTV from me. I still sneak an occasional candy corn, but I now know better than to eat the whole bag.

Now, excuse me while I go pick out a hat and slowly turn into this lady***:

What do you think of Glee? Are you a Gleek? Am I sitting on my old man porch all by myself? Someone get me my cane!

Now head over to Tiffany’s blog for some more YA viewing.

Join us next week (if you haven’t decided to hate me after this) for our reviews of a few of cable’s returning police procedurals: TNT’s Southland and A&E’s Breakout Kings.

Remember to stop by the #watchwed hashtag in Twitter to discuss any of today’s reviews, or to mention any television programs that you’d like to see on Why It’s Worth a Watch Wednesday in the future.

*If you are unfamiliar with the musical Urinetown, it is so full of awesome. Hail Malthus!
** Sorry, Bachelor watchers, no offense.

A Recap of The WatchWed Review System:

GTV (Gourmet TV): Everything we want and more
MacTV (MacNCheese TV): Guilty pleasure. Not perfect, but is satisfies
GMacTV (Gourmet MacNCheese TV): A combination of fine wine and comfort food
JFTV (Junk food TV): It’s not great for us, but we’ll go back for seconds
TBPTV (Twice Baked Potato TV): Part gourmet and delicious, while absolutely horrible for our cholesterol
SSTV (Still Simmering TV): It has potential, but the jury is still out
NIV (Nyquil Induced Viewing): Perfect for that late night television sleep timer
LOTV (Liver&Onions TV): Do we really have to explain? Blech

No treat for you today, but a quick trick or two for keeping your house smelling fresh.

Trick one, put a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil (I am currently using spearmint) in a container of baking soda. Toss a little in the toilet tank once a week and it will keep your bathroom smelling fresh.

Trick two, put a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil on your disposable air filter (you know, the one that you are supposed to change every so many months?). Run the air/heat for a few minutes. In moments, your house will go from the smell of last night’s garlic and fish to mint and eucalyptus. Or whatever you choose.
