Drawings, Driveways, and Ducks

After last Friday’s post, I decided to follow through with my promise to do things regardless of whether I am the most awesome at it ever.

To prove it, I offer you this. Some of the stuff I love.

This is my new friend. He needs a name. I wanted to draw something, but couldn’t decide what. When I was teaching elementary school, I use to draw simple little cartoons on the board for the kids. It was usually either an alligator or a walrus. So I figured a walrus was a fun starting point. I also really like the design elements of all this steampunk stuff (I know very little about it, but love the style), which turned the walrus into this.

I was reading about bokeh and really wanted to try creating images with pretty blobs of color. Instead of just thinking about it, I jumped off the couch in my PJs and looked outside for an opportunity to give it a try. The series of images above came about after laying in my neighbor’s driveway at 10 o’ clock at night. Unbeknownst to them of course.

Did I accomplish anything amazing? Is the world of art and photography going to stand up and take notice because I drew a jaunty little walrus and took some pictures of light?

Not so much.

But it was fun.

And now…for no reason at all:

Monday Madness – A Roman Holiday

I have much to catch up today. My NaNoWriMo pace was going nicely last week, along with all my other obligations (well, maybe not all…the house needs cleaning).

But, I took a break this weekend to shoot some photos for friends. It was a great working break to take. Here are a few shots from the shoot.

Checkin' out her man.

Roman Holiday inspired.

Taken at the very end of the day. We want to go back here when we have light. :)

Jonas and the Attack of the Hipstamatic

Despite the fact that I am very much a mom, I don’t do a lot of mommy/kid posts here. I don’t plan on making this into a mommy blog (there are plenty of people who do that well) BUT I will on occasion, share some posts revolving around the kid or mommying.

After all, it gives me an excuse to talk about poop.  Just not in this post.

Last weekend I went on a quick visit to North Carolina.  By train.

This may not be a big deal to many of you, but it was the first time in my thirty-something years that I’ve been on a train.  Orlando to Raleigh isn’t exactly a small start either.

I did mention that the kid was with me, right?  His first train ride, too.

Folks, he may never want to fly again.

Making sure he is appropriate carry on size.

Blanket, DVD player, and a pillow. Does traveling get any better?

Hello, dining car.

The movement of the train is perfect for sleeping.

Trees were never so exciting!

Drawing while we wait for some French Toast.

As if the train ride weren’t enough, running around a new place and spending time with awesome family (and new friends) who kept him entertained has possibly spoiled him for life.

Or maybe not. This is a kid who is, at this very moment, entertaining himself by placing letters on my feet and singing.  What follows are some of the highlights.

Walking up many stairs, a favorite of his, with his buddy Jeff.

Taking a break from wandering around the Duke campus.

Running around the campus.

Jumping time!

Shortly after this, Jonas filed his formal request for a dog the size of a horse.

Time for a little music education.

Taking time out to email Gigi (Grandma).

Learning to fist bump. Or as he calls it "fish pump".

High fives are also important to know.

In addition to the wandering and spending time with friends, we visited The Life and Science Museum in Durham.  While I won’t subject you to the entire photo tour of that experience, I will share this one shot.

We happened to show up at the butterfly pavilion just as they were going to release newly hatched butterflies.  Jonas volunteered his arm as a jumping off point for the smallest, youngest one in the bunch.

His very own baby butterfly.

Philly Photos

I love photos.

When I was a kid, I would flip through my dad’s Rangefinder magazines, and some days I’d sneak in my parents closet and look at his camera equipment.  When I was old enough to make a little money, I would buy throwaway cameras and walk down to the lake and take photos of the water, the trees, dead leaves; it didn’t matter much what the subject was.

Now, having a toddler makes it a little difficult to carry the real camera everywhere, but pre-kid, I would take my camera everywhere and snap shots of everything.

Really.

Fortunately, most friends and family I travel anywhere of note with love photography enough to understand the need to take a photo of the ground I’m walking on or the food I am eating.

A trip to Philadelphia to visit my brother and his family was the first time I wandered about with something more than a point and shoot (thanks to my wonderful sister-in-law) and realized that I loved taking pictures even more than I thought.  Here are a handful of the many, many photos I took.

Adorable boy in the market.

I have an embarrassing number of produce photos.

Still in the market.

Cute butcher pretending not to notice I was taking his picture.

I always end up with a lot of photos of what I ate. It isn't always pretty.

Blossoms.

More from the gates.

I know this is the part where you are expecting me to make some connection between photography and story telling, or something inspirational about the things in life you are passionate about.

But I’m not.  Sometimes, it’s just about the pictures.

Monday Musings – The Sea Turtle

Almost three years ago, I took a trip with one of my best friends to Mexico.  We traveled from Mexico City to Puebla, then drove to Oaxaca City, and then on to the coast of Oaxaca.

And back again.

One of many experiences worth sharing is our encounter with a group of baby sea turtles.

La Ventanilla, literally "little window"

We stopped in a small village known as La Ventanilla, on the coast of Oaxaca.  The area is known for its ecotourism, specifically its lagoon tours, so we got up early one morning and set off to explore with our guide through the dark glassy waters.  The lagoons were beautiful, but the unexpected highlight took place on our return from the lagoon.

Glassy waters and mangroves

Our guide was telling us about the efforts made in behalf of the sea turtles in the area. During certain times of year, hundreds of “tortugas” gather on the beaches and lay their eggs.  The community then gathers the eggs and reburies them in an enclosure where they can be protected from predators and monitored.  As the guide was showing us this area, some movement caught my best friend’s eye.  The guide entered the enclosure to investigate.

A group of the eggs just hatched.  Tiny baby sea turtles (I believe they are Olive Ridleys) were emerging, ready to head for the sea. The guide asked us (my best friend E and I, along with her parents) if we wanted to help them find their way to the ocean.

Our babies.

After some emphatic nods, we gathered our babies and took them close enough to where the waves were rolling in, then set them down.  It was a major effort, even being so close to the water, for those little flippers to push them along. Some of them even needed a little extra help.

It seemed to take them forever to make the short distance.  But after a lot of effort (and a little help) they made it.  It was amazing to be a part of it.  I’ll even admit, E and I teared up watching our newly adopted little ones riding the waves.

It’s amazing to think that hundreds of these tiny little guys do this without any help at all. They travel what must look like an impossibly long distance, despite the fact that they could be gobbled up by a crocodile or seagull.  Even once they make it in the water, there will be new challenges facing them.  And yet, they still do it.

When I started writing this post, my intent was to share the cuteness that is the baby sea turtle, and the amazing experience we were able to participate in (and photograph).

But as is the case with most things in life, there is a lesson.

Life throws endless obstacles our way and sometimes our goals seem impossibly far.  Yet, if we are determined to get to where we want to be, with a lot of effort (and maybe a little help) we can make it.

After all, this little guy did.

Tuesday Treats

I have a busy day ahead.  And, because this is the way things work, I am a blinding headache this morning.

In the interest of getting what needs to be done done, I bring you some recommendations of other things to go read and see.

For the watchers of things:

Leap Year - Five friends. Five startups. A contest worth half a million dollars in funding. One will win. A comedy series about the highs and lows of starting a business.

More and more content is popping up via the web.  I had hopes that this might force TV to start giving us some better written shows, but I instead I keep getting Housewives from yet another rich town I don’t care about.  Go check it out.  And hug Hulu for me.

For the readers of things:

The Formula - Fascinating article from The New Yorker archives.  If you are an artist of any kind, I think this read should appeal.  And don’t give me the “Too long, didn’t read” spiel.  That’s just stupid.

For the listeners of things:

Dog Days are Over by Florence and the Machine – This song has been playing a lot while I’ve been writing the past few days.  It’s nothing new, but I am really loving it lately.  If you don’t know it, go check it out.

Samson by Regina Spektor – I really love her.  Her music in on a bit of a loop in my house. This song, from what I’ve heard, is actually about someone she loved who died from cancer. Sad and beautiful.

For the askers of questions:

That person you admire, what prevents you from telling them? (via @MrCraigBierko)

For the seekers of cuteness:

My beautiful niece, Sylvie

What?  You didn’t think I could spend the past several days with visiting family and not sneak a kid picture in, did you?

Have a great Tuesday everyone.
